Capital Punishment is back!
When you're accused of murder, you'd better hide, run, or fight.
The Third Rule is England's new infallible capital punishment.
Absolute proof of guilt is no longer required, so there’s a queue at the Slaughter House doors.
CSI Eddie Collins hasn't killed anyone, but he knows who has.
That’s why he’s on the Slaughter House list, and when a government hunter tracks him down, Eddie has to fight or die.
‘If you want to kill serious crime, you have to kill serious criminals.’
Sir George Deacon, Minster of Justice.
‘I've read all the usual suspects - Ian Rankin, Mark Billingham, Peter Robinson, Peter James, Stuart McBride, etc - and was looking for something similar. I wasn't disappointed with Andrew Barrett.’

Oh! My! Stars! I truly loved this book. It was suspenseful, heartbreaking, intense, and extremely frustrating. I was having some difficulty at the beginning of the book with keeping the characters straight and trying to determine exactly what part they were playing in this story. I seriously, at one point thought I was going to have to keep a scorecard. But as the story went alone, Mr Barrett began to draw all of the separate threads together to weave into an amazing story. Is it perfect? Not by a long shot. I could have done without all the repetitious detail about Eddie's drinking, and I definitely could have done without all of the profanity. In my opinion Mr Barrett is much too talented an author to resort to a "throw away gimmick" like overuse of profanity. But..that's just my personal opinion and others may have a different one. Mr Barrett obviously does. One thing I have to give him credit for is the ability to create characters that you despise down to your very core. There is not a redeeming characteristic anywhere in their bodies!!! I was so ready for the bad guys to "get theirs"! Another thing that you should be prepared for is that Mr Barrett's pen is sharper than a cleaver. Don't become too attached to the characters; he can be vicious!! All in all, I highly recommend The Third Rule, even with the problems I had with it. I will definitely be reading the other books in the series.

The Third Rule Mr Andrew Barrett 9781523790630 Books Reviews
This is a rewrite of his original book. Dont let that stop you from reading this one. I read the original over a year ago and barely found anything recognizable in this one. The good news is the latest is a much better read. It'll get you hooked on Barrett's writing which was good the first time but is outstanding the second time thru. The story is about what happens when a politician without principals becomes too powerful. Everyone loses!! Some more than others. It also shows how the loss of a son can make a man bitter and depressed. How does someone overcome that loss? See how Collins handles it. What can he do to overcome such a loss? Can one really overcome such a loss? Read The Third Rule for some answers.
My goodness, where do I start! My blood pressure still hasn't gotten back to normal after reading The Third Rule! It wasn't the fastest book to read, but that was kind of a good thing. I mean, it was so full of raw emotion that it sometimes took awhile to digest it and be able to move on! Sometimes, I would be both full of dread to find out what was on the next page and yet couldn't wait a second longer to turn that page! It was sometimes exhausting and sometimes exhilarating, but always exciting in the best of ways! I can't tell you how many times I put the book down for the night, only to pick it back up after I couldn't stop thinking about it! To say it was a book that will stick with you for a long time is an understatement for sure! I don't want to give away anything crucial, but when I finished The Third Rule last night, I had to start the next book because I wanted to see what would happen to a particular character (although The Third Rule was wrapped up nicely so no worries there)! So now I find that I'm already worried about the 2nd book and what I will find in this one! I could easily see this book becoming a movie and a classic to be read by millions of anxious readers for centuries!
Andrew Barrett is a great writer. I found The Third Rule very interesting, if not extremely dark (lots of death and destruction). I am an American, so I did have a bit of a hard time following some of the politics and language, but I managed to fill in the blanks. Eddie Collins is a bit hard to like at times, but in the end, he is a good guy who has had a lot of bad things happen to him and somehow managed to stay on the right side of the law. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good mystery/thriller, but be warned - it is not for the light of heart!
Andrew Barrett paints vividly striking (and often disturbing) pictures with every keystroke. He is a true artist of the keyboard! Whether it is the horror of a crime scene or the abject misery of Eddie's utter emotional desolation, he captures it all for the reader to digest.
Every page of "The Third Rule" pulled me deeper into Eddie Collins' world. The unlikely hero grabbed hold of my emotions, and propelled me through each page of his tortured existence.
"The Third Rule" was initially well outside my normal comfort zone - the 250 page "cozy mystery!" There is nothing "cozy" about Eddie Collins' world. But from the start I was pulled into his world and couldn't wait to turn each page as his saga continued.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys mysteries with intriguing character development, multiple storylines and lots of surprises. It was well worth stretching the boundaries of my comfort zone! Andrew Barrett is a master who has earned a new lifelong fan!
Written in the 1990's it describes an England of the future (2004) which is very much like where we seem to be headed today in the US. Particularly parallel and striking is punishment based on an arrest, not a conviction, severe punishment for very minor crimes and the national identity card with a national registration and jail for not being registered. The plot is thick, the characters are well drawn, evil and stupidity are everywhere, and, along with all of this, a good understanding of alcoholism and drug abuse. But it is a good read, nonetheless.
